Baby Walkers
There are two major criticisms of the typical baby walker. First of all, critics say they are dangerous as there are an alarmingly high amount of babies that end up in the emergency room because they have fallen down a step in a baby walker. In my opinion, the blame for this should be put on the parents – not the baby walker device. Just as if your baby was crawling around, stairways, ovens, bookshelves and other potentially hazardous places in your home should always be blocked off from babies. It is very important to baby-proof your home in order to create a safe environment.
The other major criticism of baby walkers is that there is a study out that shows that baby walkers actually delay development in the area of walking. Babies come to rely on the walker and do not need to practice standing up and taking actual steps. Additionally, the babies will sit all the way into the seat and not exercise the muscles needed for walking.
There is a company that has addressed this second issue. They have created a walker that allows for more of a suspension feeling for the baby. Your child would be able to bounce up and down while learning the movements needed to start taking steps.
Baby walkers can be extremely helpful because they allow a little bit of freedom for the parent while the child is contained in the walker and still getting exercise. If you baby proof your home and purchase a walker that allows your baby to work out its legs, baby walkers could be very convenient in the home.
