Mistakes people Can Make With Wooden Sash Windows

Windows in a home add character to the property and allow in much needed daylight.  Wooden sash windows have more character than most windows and are a very attractive feature in a home.  However like any windows, wooden sash windows need to be maintained if they are to stay looking fresh and inviting to any visitors to your home.  In this article we will discuss the mistakes that some people make with regard to the maintenance of timber sash windows.

1. They do not clean them often enough.

Wooden sash windows most probably have sashes that contain six over six panes.  Have not doubt that this can be off-putting to the unfortunate window cleaner (you!), that has to wash them and very often the cleaning of traditional sash windows can get put on the long finger for this reason.  However, if you make the effort to clean your wooden sash windows regularly, they will reward you handsomely.  Windows that are bright and clean let a lot more light into the home than dusty windows and they also make the residence look much fresher from the outside.

2. They do not paint their wooden sash windows.

You do not have to paint your wooden sash windows every year for them to look well, even if one of the advantages of these windows is the fact that you can change the colour whenever you wish, unlike pvc sash windows.  However, you should check your windows every so often to see that the paint is not becoming damaged and you probably should consider re-painting them every 5 years.  Some people wait until they can see bare timber through the paintwork before they think about repainting and with inclement weather this can mean that the timber of the frame is exposed to water and might rot.

3. They do not carry out brief and regular inspection of their windows.

‘Little and often’ is a good phrase to keep in mind with regard to wooden sash window maintenance.  In timber sash windows there can be pulleys, cords and counterweights that should be inspected at regular periods in order to ensure that the cords are not frayed.  Around the frame should be inspected to ensure that draughts are not getting into your home and often it is a good idea to vacuum in and around the sashes to keep dirt and dust from clogging up the operational area of the sashes.

Most people want to do the right thing by their windows.  If they could avoid the above mistakes and give their wooden sash windows regular maintenance then their windows will look inviting from the outside, will allow more light into the home and will continue to operate properly for many years.
