Surge Protector – Three Ways To Protect Your Home

Electricians are called out to examine homes affected by lightning strikes more often that you are probably aware of. The main reason is equipment failure from the surge in electricity that overloaded the main circuit conduits in the home. This will destroy any electronic appliance or television that is connected to an outlet during the surge if it is not protected by a whole house surge protector. These units are installed at the main circuit breaker box and act as a barrier to incoming power surges.

They can’t stop every surge and will not likely stop the direct blast from a lightning strike but they will offer protection for distant strikes. Single surge protectors should be installed within the home for each individual electronic appliance to add further protection. This will stop any surge that gets past the whole house surge protector. These are fairly inexpensive and can be found easily in most retail electronic stores or local home improvement centers.

A third type of surge protector is one that maintains the power of your equipment during a blackout or complete loss of power. This is called an Uninterruptible Power Supply, or UPS surge protector. It runs off a backup battery supply that will allow you up to twenty minutes of power so that you can safely shut down your equipment and not lose any data or suffer surge damage should the power be restored suddenly. You should review surge protector ratings for each electronic device you have and install the one that best fits your situation.
