The Benefits of and Asbestos Management Plan

Asbestos management plans are looked at as a kind of burden by most of the owners of the companies which are into the production of this material. As per these asbestos management plans, the employers or the owners should ensure that the employees or people around their facility should not get affected by the exposure to the toxic asbestos fibers, or in case they get affected, they should be properly compensated for the damage incurred.

A well formulated asbestos management plan, requires the owner of the firm to look into all relevant aspects that are associated with the handling and the exposure to the product. Some of them are the potential hazard due to exposure, presence of ACM (Asbestos containing materials), creating employee awareness and providing training, renovations and maintenance operations, review of documents like blue prints, construction specifications, inspection of buildings which are close to these ACMs, sampling and assessment of the physical condition of the ACM, assigning appropriate actions against the suspected ACMs, developing operations and maintenance programs to control ACMs, etc.

The main objective of an asbestos management plan is not to shut down the companies which utilize of the naturally occurring mineral but to use it in such a manner that there is little exposure and no damaged caused to the environment and the people who are working around this it. Such rules and regulations have been welcomed by both the employers and the employees as it takes the needs of both the parties into consideration.

As per an asbestos management plan, there is a training program for the employees which should be facilitated by the employers. The training program it typically around fourteen hours and it would explain the employees as to how should they operate around the potentially hazardous material, which would include some safety procedures as well. The fire and safety supervisor is the first person who would be required to attend this training program as he is the person who is the busiest of all during emergency situations. The training should be provided before the assignment or the project commences and thereafter it should be conducted on an annual basis. Further to that, repetitive training should be provided by someone who is qualified and who has the experience of conducting such trainings in the past.

For all the house keeping staff who was given training as per the asbestos management plan, it important to be aware where they could be exposed to the hazardous effects of the asbestos, the different places in the company which are ACM filled, ACM recognition and deterioration and how to react or respond to these ACM episodes. The training as outlined the asbestos management plan can be done any number of times but it is mandatory that it takes place at least once in a year.

There are also some other employees who are required to attend these training programs compulsorily. Those employees are custodians, plumbers, HVAC employees, Information System technicians, or part-time employees who could be working in the company on a contract basis. If these people are getting close to these ACMs, then they should also be given the appropriate training.
