There are Ways to Stop Nail Biting

Nail biting is one of the nervous habits that many people are used to, and would like to eliminate in order to have a healthier appearance. While nail biting is not a serious problem, it can contribute to extensive nail breakage and open up the nail bed to potentially dangerous bacteria. Luckily, for nail biting, ways to stop are out there.

One popular solution for nail biting is the use of nail biting polishes, which can be used by anyone. Stop nail biting polish is applied to the nail just like cosmetic nail polish, but has a strong, bitter taste that alerts and punishes you each time you begin to bite the nails. Nail biting is such a persistent habit because many people do not even realize when they have begun to bite. Polish makes you more aware, and gives you an incentive not to bite (avoiding the distasteful experience of the polish.) Using incentives and aversions is a general technique that can be used to shape any habits, and works particularly well to reduce nail biting.

Often women (and daring men) can use cosmetic nail polish to achieve a comparable effect, as the presence of any paint on the nail makes it more noticeable when you begin to chew on the tips. Whichever type you choose, try to make a mental note of the triggers of your nail biting, as it may be a response to stressful situations. If this is the case, stress management and conscious effort to refrain from nail biting when faced with stress will help you stop nail biting in the long run.

By keeping your nails short and well groomed, you can also decrease the likelihood of nail biting. Many people start to bite their nails in response to breakage or a hangnail; by treating these problems efficiently, you take away triggers that lead to biting.

In the winter and fall months, wearing gloves is a good way to both eliminate nail biting and make a fashion statement.

Whichever methods you prefer, the key to stop nail biting is to be vigilant and persistent, as it may take weeks or even months to break yourself of the habit- and when you do, feel free to reward yourself!
