Zoysia Grass Plugs Pay off, But Slowly
Zoysia grass should be planted as sod and never as seed, sprigs or as zoysia grass plugs. It takes a long time for the seeds to germinate and plugs will take at least twelve months to fill in the areas around them. They will not offer enough resistance to erosion to protect your lawn. Be sure that all the lawn is covered in sod so that the grass does not have to fill in. If there are shady areas in your lawn, the grass will grow even slower.
In fact, if your yard is heavily shaded, do not use Zoysia grass. This grass needs sunlight to green up. Without full sun, you will have yellow spots in the lawn that will remain there all through the growing season.
